Texas Tax Holiday is this Weekend

The new school year is about to start.  Thanks to the Texas state legislature, shopping for new school supplies and related items is a little cheaper this weekend.

Texas’ annual Tax Holiday started at midnight August 17 and will run through Sunday at 11:59 PM.  See the complete list of tax free items at the Texas state comptroller’s office. In general, most items classified as school supplies including backpacks, clothing and footwear are exempt from sales tax. With an 8.25% tax rate, this translates to a savings of $8 on every $100 purchased. The maximum price per item that can be bought tax free is $100. This year, items bought over the internet will also be exempt from taxes.

Although not necessarily for school use, parents can take advantage of the sale and stock up on tax-free diapers or work clothes and shoes for themselves.  The lawmakers clarified what is considered a backpack.  Travel luggage will no longer be sold tax free.

Several shopping malls near Frisco ISD, Plano ISD and McKinney ISD are open later than usual and will highlight which school items will be on sale this weekend.
